Country Care Equine Veterinary Services offers a wide variety of high-quality equine veterinary services to keep your horse happy and healthy.
We offer AAEP-recommended core vaccines for all age groups. Additional "at-risk" vaccinations may also be recommended for horses that travel, are pregnant, or have an increased risk of exposure. We will work with you to tailor a program for your horse based on their individual needs.
Coggins test identifies EIA (Equine Infectious Anemia). It is required for all horses traveling across state lines and attending shows or auctions. Test results in Minnesota are current for 12 months. Results will be sent via email.
Annual dental examinations are recommended in horses of all ages and may need to be more frequent as your horse ages. Floating takes down sharp enamel points on the teeth formed by normal teeth growth and the grading of food that can cause cheek and/or tongue ulcerations. Some common signs that may indicate your horse is having dental issues are dropping food, weight loss, difficulty chewing, excessive salivation, foul breath, facial swelling, difficulty with the bit, or turning their head as they chew.
We offer:
We provide the following reproduction services.
We offer the following examinations for your horse
Your horse's mobility is vital to their everyday life and happiness. Lameness in horses can be a serious and painful problem with several possible causes, and it is important to notice the signs early to improve the chances of successful treatment. Lameness is a problem if your horse's gait is abnormal in any way and is usually caused by pain, injury of some sort, or mechanical restriction of normal movement.
Our lameness exams may include watching your horse move in straight lines or circles, using hoof testers to localize foot pain, performing flexion tests, using diagnostic nerve blocks to help localize the pain, and radiographs.
The pre-purchase examination helps determine where your potential new horse stands from a health and lameness perspective and what you will need to know and do to keep him going for your purposes. Our pre-purchase exam includes a complete physical and soundness exam to get you the most information possible.
Joint wear and tear is a part of every equine athlete's life. As your horse ages, joints naturally become stiff and sore. Typically, joints are injected with a combination of hyaluronic acid and a corticosteroid, along with a small amount of antibiotics to help prevent infection. These injections are a reliable way to reduce pain and inflammation that can occur with various stages of arthritis, supporting mobility and comfort in your horse.
It's important to keep your horse healthy and happy. Horses can encounter health issues at any time. Regular wellness care can oftentimes prevent these issues. We provide equine vaccinations, general health care, and preventive medicine to keep your horse healthy and happy for its entire life. Just like 34 year old grandpa "Hank" pictured above.
The portable digital X-ray unit is a powerful tool that allows us to take high-resolution radiographs (x-rays) at your farm to make accurate and timely diagnoses. We will be able to show you the resulting images within seconds, allowing us to immediately begin to outline and implement a treatment plan for your horse.
We provide a wide variety of laboratory services, including:
We provide the following surgical procedures:
Horse eyes are large and protruding as compared to other animals. They can often inadvertently scratch their cornea (the clear layer on the front of the eye). Because these painful abrasions or ulcers are not always visible with the unaided eye, a fluorescein stain test will be conducted to display the location and size of the abrasion. In addition to corneal damage, equine recurrent uveitis (moon blindness) is another painful condition in horses. This condition is due to inflammation of the eye's interior. Certain breeds are predisposed to developing this disease, and if not treated, it can lead to blindness.
An ophthalmic exam should be performed on your horse if you notice any of the following signs:
Skin disease or irritation can cause distress. Horses that are scratching have hair loss, and open wounds can all be tell-tale signs of an underlying skin problem. These are some of the skin conditions that can affect horses.
We understand that this is one of the hardest decisions any horse owner will make. Euthanasia is a difficult yet inevitable event of animal ownership. Regardless of whether it is planned or unplanned, it is always an emotional moment for everyone involved. We will do our best to make it an easy procedure for all.
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has established guidelines that state the justification for euthanasia should be based solely on medical, not economic considerations, regardless of the age, sex, or potential value of a horse. The following criteria should be considered in evaluating the immediate necessity for intentional euthanasia of the horse to avoid and terminate incurable and excessive suffering:
A certificate of veterinarian health inspection is required to cross state lines. The reason for this is to reduce the spread of infectious diseases. A current Coggins test is required for all certificates. We provide both interstate health certificates and Canadian health certificates.
We offer fecal egg counts to help determine the best deworming program for each horse.
Depending on a horse's age, metabolism, performance level, or illnesses, they will have different dietary requirements. We offer nutrition consultations to help you meet your horse's specific dietary needs.
Microchipping is becoming a more common form of identification, especially in certain breeds, for registry requirements and specific competing requirements for USEF, and it is also providing a positive form of identification.
